On Being Sick, Barbells for Boobs, Riding Camels, & PRs aka Life Lately

The weeks are just flying by. I meant to post more last week but I got a little sick, not all out sick, but I feel like I have been hovering on that line between “I don’t feel too hot” and “Leave me alone I’m Dying” for a good week. Life right now is super busy and if I don’t go go go I feel like I will just stop. I lose will power, focus, and drive. It’s been a delicate balance this past week, trying to give myself some slack for not feeling good but not letting myself be totally lazy because I’m not really sick. Mornings have been the worst. It is cold and dark and that’s when my cough and congestion feel the worst. I’m usually fine by the end of the day and then it gets worse at night. I’m taking all my vitamins & supplements, adding in some tea & honey, and trying to get more rest than normal. I know my body needs it, but life doesn’t stop when mom is sick so It’s hard to find time to rest! Hopefully I’ll be back to normal soon, cause this whole coughing all night long thing is so irritating.

Since I feel like I’ve been out of it for so long I wanted to do a random update post about things that have been going on. Hold on and enjoy the ride!

Back on October 19th our box, CrossFit 70, hosted a Barbells for Boobs Fundraising Event. We are still a relatively small box and I am SO proud to say we raised $1230 to help provide mammograms for people who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford them. Most of the money came from our guys who promised they would do the workout Grace (30 Clean & Jerks for Time) in either a bra or booty shorts if they met their fundraising goal.

They didn’t disappoint. Several of them even got PRs on it! I personally PR’d that bad boy by almost 2 minutes. Would have been even longer if I didn’t have to stop to pull my pants up every 3rd rep #weightlossproblems

and what the heck is going on with my pant legs by the way? Who am I, LL Cool J? My pants are from TJ Maxx, Shirt from Barbells for Boobs, Wrist Wraps from WOD Gear, and headband from Junk Brand. Speaking of Junk Brand Headbands, they are one of my new favorite things. I like the ones that tie. I have this one and a fat black and white polka dot one and I almost always have them on at the box. They are epic, just sayin.

So, Barbells for Boobs went awesome. We had fun, raised money for a good cause, and I got a 3:54RX Grace.

After that we had an awesome community event at Eckert’s Fun Farm in Milstadt, IL. We go like every year but this time we did it as a box. We roasted hot dogs and marshmallows. Some people went on the carnival rides. And I rode a camel. And let me just tell you that Riding a camel and Riding an Elephant have been on my bucket list since before the Geico Commercial made the camel popular. Either way, I got to ride it.

All of last week was a bit of blur with being sick, So I’m guessing nothing really exciting happened. If it did you probably saw it on instagram. This past weekend was as relaxing as a weekend can be for me lately. Saturday we did Airforce WOD and it had been awhile since I’d done it and I was looking for a PR. Last time I did really well and I wasn’t sure if not feeling well plus the heavy overhead squats I did the day before would help me… If you aren’t familiar with Airforce WOD check this out…

For time:
20 Thrusters
20 Sumo deadlift high pulls
20 Push jerks
20 Overhead squats
20 Front squats

Men will use a 95lb barbell. Women will use 65lbs. Each athlete must do four burpees at the beginning of every minute before moving on to the barbell work. The athlete is allowed to move to the next barbell skill once an he/she has completed all 20 reps. If the minute clock beeps during a repetition the athlete will complete their rep and then start their four burpees. There is a 20 min cap.

A little spicy, no? Anyway, I was slower than my last time by almost a minute. For a second I had a pity party. Who doesn’t want to PR every time they do a benchmark WOD? But then I realized that not every day is going to be a PR. That’s what I tell our clients and I need to be able to take my own advice. I know where I lost it. It was just as much a mental problem as it was a Physical problem. So, a little life lesson tucked into all this rambling… Your mind really does give up before your body should. Recognize your mistake, learn from it, grow from it, and come back next time with a vengeance.

I miss hearing from you all.

What are you up to? How’s life these days?

    1. Thanks! I’d be even faster if I actually jerked instead of push press. Whoops. And that WOD is painful… but not as bad as the 100 back squats @ 95lbs I did yesterday! I’ve got quite the waddle going on.
