When I first started working out I didn’t really think about protein. In my mind Protein Powders were what all those muscle heads that stood by the free weights used. It was hard enough for me to figure out this whole exercise deal, adding in protein was like another variable in a crazy algebra problem that I couldn’t figure out. After watching my husband and his BFF use protein to supplement their diet and lose fat while gaining muscle I figured they were on to something. So I started using protein powder within 30 minutes of working out and occasionally as an afternoon snack to hold off the hunger. I realized that protein supplements like powders and bars can be a really great tool for my weight loss journey. I’m not typically picky about the kind of protein I use, but when it comes to powders I want them to be low in calories and sugar but still have a significant amount of protein. I like to get the most bang for my buck with my calories.
I was sent a box of protein goodies to try out from my friends at Designer Whey. The first thing I noticed was the wide variety of products, all protein packed! Not only do they have awesome protein powders, but they have ready to drink shakes, protein bars, and the awesome Protein 2Go Drink packs.
The protein powders I had in my box were the vanilla and White Chocolate. Uhm, yes please! I loved the flavor of both. They weren’t overly sweet like some other protein powders can be. It wasn’t chalky at all and mixed well. I like mixing my protein powder with Silk Pure Almond.
The great thing about protein powder is how versatile it is. Not only is it great for a quick after workout recovery drink, but you can use it to make protein packed goodies and snacks. My favorite thing to cook using protein powder are Protein Pancakes! Obviously you smother them in nut butter and organic maple syrup as well.
The protein powder is just 100 calories per scoop and has 18g of protein and only 2g of sugar. I think those are excellent specs!
The ready to go shakes were great too, and easy to throw in the gym bag for a quick recovery shake after a hard WOD. Speaking of on the go protein, I was totally intrigued by the Protein 2GO. It was basically like a Crystal Lite type powder that you mix into water, but it has 10g of protein for just 50 calories. I keep these in my purse so I don’t end up making bad snack choices on the go.
It mixes very easily into water, tastes good and really kept me satisfied until my next meal time. This is an awesome thing to keep on hand! It comes in Mixed Berry (my favorite), Lemonade, and Tropical Orange.
The protein bars were great. They didn’t last very long… I gobbled them up quick! They sent me a few of each of their flavors: Triple Chocolate Crunch, Chocolate Caramel Crunch, and Peanut Butter Crunch.
These were all 170 calories or less, had 10g of protein, and tasted amazing. They were kinda like candy bars. I brought them along on our trip to Florida – the perfect road trip snack!
Overall I was really pleased with the quality of all the Designer Whey products, and I would purchase them for myself. Be sure to check them out at their website (they even have nutrition and fitness tips and blogs!) or on twitter and facebook.
Do you use protein supplements? If So, what are some of your favorites? If not, would you?
I was sent these products to review because of my role as a FitFluential Ambassador. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I tried their Chocolate Caramel crunch protein bar and I LOVED it so much I bought a whole box. It’s my new favorite bar and I love that it’s naturally sweetened and under 200 🙂 I used to not buy Designer Whey becuase I thought it had artificial ingredients so I’m very happily surprised that they don’t and they are good. Great post!

I love your review! I am very iffy about trying to protein powders because I generally don’t like the taste… and especially in bars since many taste a tad funny. But if it tastes good AND you can cook with it, I may have to give it a try!

Some protein powders have that “chalky” taste – This one didn’t! yay! You can cook with any protein powder… seriously the sky is the limit!

I struggle to find protein that tastes good and not kill my stomach. I’m not sure on whey, I have only recently started connecting protein supplements to digestive pain. Many are super high in sugar as well, so I was pleased to see this isn’t.. I might have to see if they have a small sample pack to try 🙂

I’ve heard of a few people that have trouble with Whey. I know GNC has an egg protein, maybe that would be easier on you!
